    Herb Cox Herb Cox

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Herb Cox, former Saskatchewan Party MLA and cabinet minister. In honor of his life and service, flags at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building were lowered to half-staff on Tuesday, reflecting the profound respect held for his contributions to the province.

Herb Cox was first elected as the Saskatchewan Party MLA for Battlefords in 2011, earning the trust of his community again with his re-election in 2016. After nearly a decade of public service, he chose not to run again in 2020. Throughout his political career, Cox was recognized for his dedication, steady leadership, and commitment to representing the people of Battlefords with integrity.

Cox’s years in public office were marked by significant health challenges. In 2012, he was diagnosed with bone cancer, a battle he faced with courage and resolve. While serving as Environment Minister in 2016, he stepped away from Cabinet to undergo life-saving stem cell treatment. In his own words at the time, “I have gone through this treatment once before a few years back, and I know it would make it extremely difficult to continue to perform my duties as a cabinet minister.”

Tributes have already begun to pour in. Former Saskatoon Southeast MLA Don Morgan expressed heartfelt condolences, remembering Cox warmly: “He was a good friend and colleague… He will be missed. Sympathies and prayers to his friends and family.” As the province reflects on his service, Herb Cox will be remembered for his perseverance, public dedication, and the grace with which he faced adversity. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time.
